SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Creighton softball team fell 5-4 to UC Santa Barbara in the finale of the UCSB Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Bluejays fell to 9-6 on the season with the loss, while UC Santa Barbara improved to 11-10 overall with the win.
Using a similar formula to the Bluejays success on Saturday, Creighton's bats gave them an early lead in the first inning. Junior Lily West got things started with a two-out single to left before stealing second and coming around to score the first run of the game on an RBI single from Sydney Potter.
The Bluejays would then capitalize on a walk to Hannah Poole and a hit-by-pitch from Ashten Pierson with a two-run single from Sydra Seville to give the Jays a 3-0 lead in the second.
UC Santa Barbara answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the second to pull within one at 3-2. A walk to Giselle Mejia and a single from Emily Carr puts runners on the corners before a perfectly executed double steal allowed Mejia to come in to score. Tehya Banks then delivered an RBI double to right center to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After a pair of scoreless frames, Creighton used back-to-back singles from Potter and Erika Perez to open the fifth, before a two-out RBI single from Hannah Poole gave the Bluejays a 4-2 advantage.
UC Santa Barbara, however, responded with an Alexa Sams two-run single to center to knot things up at 4-4 in the bottom half of the fifth, before eventually taking a 5-4 lead on a game-winning RBI single from Kaylin Garcia the sixth.
The Bluejays collected nine hits on the day, with Seville and Potter each recording two apiece. Freshman Abby Rushed suffered her first loss of the season, allowing two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of relief, after Bluejay starter Brooke Shifflett gave up three runs on two hits and three walks in 4.0 innings of work.
UC Santa Barbara's Sam Stoll (3-1) picked up the win, firing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Guachos.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, March 7 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Providence for the BIG EAST opener.
