CHICAGO, Ill. – The Creighton men's tennis team used an overall dominant performance to soar past the defending BIG EAST Tournament champions DePaul, 6-1, on Friday night at the XS Tennis Village in Chicago, Ill.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, picking up their third consecutive win over the Blue Demons. DePaul meanwhile fell to 9-8 on the year and 1-1 in league action with the loss.
"We're growing as a team," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "The idea of individual development we've been focusing on for some time seems to be catching on. I hope we can continue to evolve into a team that mainly focuses on getting better."
The Bluejays jumped out to an early lead after claiming victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to secure the first point of the match. Junior's Zachary Kuo and Kirtan Patel stormed out of the gates capturing a 6-3 win at the No. 3 doubles position, while junior Yuma Daijima and senior Alejandro Gandini teamed up for a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 doubles spot to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
Creighton continued to dominate in singles play, soaring to straight-set victories on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles court to secure the dual victory.
Freshman Rocky McKenzie got the Bluejays started with a 6-4, 6-4 win on the No. 5 singles spot, before Patel picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win on the No. 2 singles court to give the Bluejays a 3-0 advantage.
Gandini, who was playing singles for the first time since Feb. 16, would then pick up a 6-2, 7-6 straight-sets win at the top singles spot to clinch the overall dual for the Bluejays.
DePaul would get on the scoreboard with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5, three-set win by Pablo Torres Almeida on the No. 3 singles court, before Kuo answered with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 triumph at the No. 4 singles position to extend the Jays lead to 5-1.
Senior Ethan Neil would then close out the match with a thrilling 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 three-set win on the No. 6 singles court to secure the Bluejays third consecutive win over DePaul.
