Softball Drops BIG EAST Opener at Providence, 5-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Creighton softball team dropped its BIG EAST opener to Providence, 5-4, on Friday afternoon at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
The Bluejays fell to 9-7 on the year and 0-1 in BIG EAST play with the loss, dropping to 6-5 in BIG EAST openers. Providence on the other hand, improved to 3-12 on the year and 1-0 in league action.
The Friars opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on a pair of Bluejay errors and an RBI single from Emma Eichten to take an early 3-0 lead.
Creighton got on the scoreboard in the top half of the fourth as junior Ella Dalton reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by junior Erika Perez to make the score 3-1.
Providence, however, answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single from Gabriella Lee, pushing their advantage back out to 4-1.
The Bluejays would cut the deficit right back down to two in the top half of the fifth when senior Sydra Seville laced an RBI single into center, scoring Lynn Davis from second to make the score 4-2.
After a scoreless frame in the field, sophomore Sydney Potter blasted her team-leading third home run of the season to deep left center to cut the deficit to 4-3, before Providence tacked on an additional run in the bottom half of the inning to regain a two-run advantage (5-3).
Creighton would not go away quietly as Seville raced out a two-out triple and scored on an RBI single to right from junior Lily West, before Providence's Jessica Walker got sophomore Kaelan Schultz to pop out to the catcher to end the game.
Providence's Tori Grifone picked up the win registering eight strikeouts across five innings of work, while Walker collected her first save of the season in the victory. Lee led the way offensively for the Friars going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Seville, West and Potter combined for six of the Bluejays seven hits on the day, while Brooklyn Patchen moved to 4-4 on the year, suffering the loss in the circle.
Creighton will continue its three-game series with Providence on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT from Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
