OMAHA, Neb. – The hot hitting Creighton softball team launched a pair of home runs and two triples as the Bluejays rolled to a 6-1 victory over Providence on Saturday morning at Glay Field to earn their first BIG EAST win of the season.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 10-7 on the year and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Friars fell to 3-13 overall and 1-1 in league action.
Creighton came out swinging from the jump as Sydra Seville laced a triple into the left center gap. One out later sophomore Sydney Potter delivered an RBI single into left center to give the Bluejays a quick 1-0 lead.
The Jays' advantage would grow to 2-0 in the top of the second when junior Erika Perez launched her team-leading fourth home run of the season to straight away center field.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, Providence broke through and plated their first run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Emma Eichten broke up Brooke Shifflett's no-hit bid with a two-out single to left, before a walk to Rachael Petrarca and a single from Gabriella Sebastian loaded the bases. Elisa Smith then worked a walk to bring in the Friars first run of the game to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Creighton, however, went right back to work, plating four runs on three hits and a Providence error in the top half of the sixth to take a five-run lead. Seville got the Jays started racing out an infield single, before Hannah Poole reached on a fielding error by the left fielder. A wild pitch advanced the runner to second and third before sophomore Avery Barnard delivered a two-run triple, the first hit of her collegiate career, into the right center field gap to give the Jays a 4-1 lead. Barnard would come in to score on a wild pitch, before redshirt freshman Kenzie Nakasawa launched her first career home run over the left field wall to secure the 6-1 win for the Bluejays.
Shifflett (6-1) earned her sixth win of the season allowing one run on four hits while striking out five in the complete-game effort. Seville paced the Bluejays offense with two hits, including a triple, while Perez and Nakasawa each blasted home runs.
Creighton and Providence wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
