Creighton's 19 runs were tied for the third most in a single game in program history
The Bluejays improved to 8-7 in BIG EAST play with their sixth straight league win, while climbing to 18-20 overall. Butler, meanwhile, fell to 21-18 on the year and 10-8 in league play with their fifth consecutive setback.
Creighton's 19 runs scored on Sunday were tied for the third most school history, trailing only the program record 24 runs scored against Toledo on Feb. 8, 2020, and the 20 runs scored against the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) on Feb. 9, 2000.
Sophomore Sydney Potter led CU's offensive explosion, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, including a grand slam, and a career-high seven RBI. Potter's seven runs driven in were tied for the second most in a single game in program history, trailing only the eight RBI Alexis Cantu collected against Wichita State on April 6, 2012. Potter has now driven in 45 runs this season, moving into fifth on Creighton's single season runs batted in list.
Junior Ella Dalton added in three hits and a career-high four RBI of her own, while junior Lily West collected a pair of hits and two runs scored, as sophomore Kaelan Schultz recorded an addition four RBI on a second Bluejay grand slam. Bluejay starter Kenzie Schopfer (5-6) picked up her fifth consecutive win in the circle, after allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits and one walk in 3.0 innings of work.
Creighton soared out to an early 7-0 lead, scoring five runs in the first and two more in the second. Senior Sydra Seville earned a walk and sophomore Ashten Pierson was hit by a pitch to open the game, before advancing to second and third on a fielder's choice from Schultz that loaded the bases. Potter then delivered an RBI single through the left side to give Creighton a 1-0 lead. An Erika Perez hit-by-pitch and a Hannah Poole sacrifice fly pushed the lead out to 3-0, before a two-run single down the left field line from Dalton gave CU a 5-0 edge.
A two-out walk from Schultz in the second paid dividends as Potter blasted the first of her two home runs over the right field wall to push the Jays lead out to 7-0.
Butler countered with three runs in the third as Sydney Carter scored on a Bluejay throwing error that snapped a 21-inning errorless streak for CU. Hailey Conger and Ella White followed with back-to-back RBI singles, cutting the deficit down to 7-4.
Creighton, however, opened things up plating six runs on four hits in the bottom half of the third inning. Poole opened the frame with a single and advancing to second on a Kenzie Nakasawa Walk. A Poole and Nakasawa double steal advanced runners to second and third, before coming in to score on a two-run single from Dalton to make the score 9-4. Seville then drew her second walk of the day and West reached on a single up the middle to load the bases, before Potter lined her first grand slam of the season over the right center field wall to give CU a 13-3 lead.
The Bluejays were not quite done yet, scored six addition runs in the bottom half of the fourth to seal the victory. Four straight singles from Dalton, Seville, Pierson and West plated two, before the second grand slam of the season for Schultz as the Bluejays lead grew to 19-3. Butler would tack on two runs in the fifth, before sophomore Brooklyn Patchen induced a groundout too short to close out the 19-5 win for the Bluejays.
Creighton will be back inside the friendly confines of the Creighton Sports Complex next weekend as they host St. John's, the BIG EAST frontrunner, in a three-game Easter weekend series. The Bluejays and Red Storm will begin the three-game set on Thursday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m.
