Six-Run Third Powers Bluejay Softball to 7-2 Victory Over Hoyas

WASHINGTON, D.C. --Â Powered by homers from Kaelan Schultz and Lily West as well as strong pitching from Brooklyn Patchen, the Creighton Softball team posted a 7-2 victory over Georgetown on Saturday morning at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.Â
The win lifted the Bluejays to 14-19 overall and 4-7 in BIG EAST play, securing its first BIG EAST series win of the season, while Georgetown fell to 8-22 overall and 0-14 in league action.Â
After a scoreless first, Creighton soared out to a 1-0 lead as Schultz crushed a leadoff home run over the left field wall for her sixth homer of the year.Â
Creighton would then plate six runs in the top half of the third to build a monumental 7-0 lead. The Bluejays had its first eight batters reach base safely in the frame, collecting seven hits and a walk. Senior Syrda Seville and sophomore Ashten Pierson opened the frame with back-to-back singles, before West blasted a three-run home run to give the Jays a 4-0 advantage. Three straight singles from Schultz, Sydney Potter and Kenzie Nakasawa pushed the lead to 5-0, before a wild pitch and an RBI single from Hannah Poole opened up a 7-0 lead.Â
The Hoyas scratched the scoreboard for the first time in the series in bottom of the fifth as Hollie Pardini connected on a home run to left, breaking up Patchen's no-hit bid. Dani Koo and Gabby Park followed with a single and double put runners on second and third with no one out, before Koo came in to score on a wild pitch to cut Bluejays lead down to 7-2.Â
Georgetown would threaten again in the bottom of the sixth inning, placing runners on first and second with one out, before Patchen collected her fifth strikeout of the game and induced a lineout to keep the Hoyas off the scoreboard.Â
Patchen (6-7) earned the win, limiting Georgetown to two runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out six in the complete-game victory. Georgetown starter Avery Wissmar took the loss (0-4), allowing four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings, while Abby Kozo allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in 0.2 innings of relief.Â
Offensively, Schultz went 3-for-4 with two singles and a home run, while Seville and Potter each collected two hits apiece. West drove in three addition runs on her second home run of the season as the Bluejays collected 13 total hits.Â
Creighton and Georgetown complete their three-gamer series on Sunday, April 6 with a single game at 10 a.m. Central. Â Â
