Men’s Tennis Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Gustavus Adolphus and Drake

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton Men's Tennis team split a doubleheader, earning a 6-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus at the Hanscom Tennis Center, before suffering their first loss of the season to Drake, 4-3, in Des Moines on Sunday, Feb. 1.
The Bluejays moved their record to 4-1 on the year with the split, while Drake improved to 2-2 with the win. Gustavus Adolphus treated Sunday's match as an exhibition in prep for their 2026 spring season.
Match 1: Creighton 6, Gustavus Adolphus 0
In the first match of the day, Creighton stormed out of the gates claiming victories on the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts. Seniors Kirtan Patel and Yuma Daijima rolled to a 6-2 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, while fellow senior Zachary Kuo and freshman Lucas Mommessin posted an identical 6-2 win on the No. 3 doubles court to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Jays continued on their winning ways, claimed straight set victories on the No. 2 through No. 6 singles courts to clinch the overall dual. Patel got things rolling with a 6-0, 6-1 win on the No. 2 singles court, moments before Kuo captured a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at the No. 4 singles slot to give the Jays a 3-0 lead. Mommessin followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on the No. 6 court, clinching the overall match for the Bluejays.
McKenzie kept things roiling with a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets win at the No. 3 singles position, before Jack McMahon closed the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on the No. 5 singles court.
Match 2: Creighton 3, Drake 4
Creighton's second match of the day saw the Bluejays take the first point of the match, securing tight doubles wins at the top two doubles positions. McKenzie and McMahon won their fourth consecutive doubles match, claiming a 6-4 win at the No. 1 doubles spot. Patel and Daijima followed suit, capturing a 7-6 (7-5) tie-breaking win at the No. 2 doubles position to give CU a 1-0 edge.
In singles, Daijima picked up a 6-1, 5-3 win on retirement to push the advantage to 2-0 on the No. 2 singles court, before Drake answered with straight set wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 singles positions to level the contest at 2-2.
The Bluejays regained the lead moments later when Patel captured a 7-6, 6-3 straight sets win over Christian Winstead at the top singles spot. Creighton's lead was short lived as Drake's Arin Menon secured a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Mathis Dahler on the No. 6 single court to tie the match at 3-3 and force a winner-take-all on court No. 4.
With the match on the line, Drake's Samuel Melaga rallied from a one-set deficit to clinch the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 three-set win to lift the Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory.
Creighton returns to the courts on Friday, Feb. 6 when they travel south to battle Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. in Stillwater, Okla.
