OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 4-0 victory over Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 6-2 on the season, while the Bears fell to 6-4 overall.
"Credit to Missouri State for competing hard even though they're battling some illness right now," said head coach Tom Lilly. "They did a great job of forcing us to win this match. We definitely have some things to work on in doubles. I didn't think we played very well this weekend, but our girls have a lot of fight in them."
Creighton got off to a fast start earning the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Freshmen Teresa Tran and Mithila Dixit picked up their fifth doubles win of the season with a 6-1 triumph on the No. 3 doubles court, before senior Ana Paula Martinez and sophomore Sophie Schwartz delivered a 6-3 victory at the top doubles court to clinch the first point of the match.
Senior Annika Elvestrom and sophomore Alem Cote quickly pushed Creighton's advantage to 3-0 with straight set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. Elvestrom cruised to her fifth consecutive singles win, claiming a 6-2, 6-1 victory on the No. 5 court, while Cote picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 singles spot.
The Jays would then close out the match with a 6-4, 6-2 straight sets triumph by Dixit at the No. 3 singles position.
Creighton returns to action on Feb. 21 for a home match against Western Illinois. First serve between the Bluejays and Leathernecks is scheduled for 3 p.m.
