DES MOINES, Iowa – Trailing 3-2, freshmen Mithila Dixit and Teresa Tran rallied the Bluejay Women's Tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Kansas City on Saturday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines Iowa.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 3-2 on the year, while the Roos fell to 0-3 overall.
"This was a full team effort today and a classy match by both teams," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Kansas City always fights hard, and it could have gone either way today. A great job by our doubles teams getting us that early lead and then two of our freshmen finishing the match in tight situations."
The Bluejays dominated early, claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Olivia Minikel and Annika Elvestrom rolled to a 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot, moments before Dixit and Tran posted an identical 6-0 win at the No. 3 doubles position to clinch the first point of the match.
Kansas City responded in singles play, earning a 6-4, 6-0 straight sets win at the top single spot, before Elvestrom claimed a 6-2, 7-5 straight sets win on the No. 5 singles court to give the Jays a 2-1 lead.
The Roos countered with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 6 line and took the lead with a 6-5, 6-7, 6-2 three-set win at the No. 2 singles spot, leaving the match in the hands of Bluejay freshmen Dixit and Tran and they did not disappoint.
Dixit earned a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) straight-sets win at the No. 3 singles spot to level the contest at 3-3. Tran then clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4 three-set win on the No. 4 singles court.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. for a match against Gustavus Adolphus at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
