New Orleans, La. -- After racing out to an early 2-0 lead behind home runs from Nate McHugh and Isaac Wachsmann, Creighton Baseball pushed across the game-winning run in the top of the ninth to sweep Tulane with a 5-4 win over Tulane on Sunday, March 15.
The victory evened Creighton's record at 8-8, while Tulane fell to 9-11 on the season.
For the third consecutive contest the Bluejays seized an early lead as McHugh blasted a first inning home run, then Wachsmann went yard to right to put Creighton up 2-0. The lead grew to 3-0 on an RBI single from Wachsmann in the third, but Tulane answered with an RBI single in the bottom half.Â
Trading runs once more in the fourth as Creighton scored on an RBI walk drawn by Ben North, while the Green Wave got a solo home run from Hugh Pinkney to make it 4-2.
The Green Wave pulled even courtesy of a two-run shot from Kaikea Harrison in the bottom of the seventh, but Creighton pushed across the lead run to win it in the ninth.
With one down in the frame, Teddy Deters laced a double down the right field line. After an intentional walk to McHugh, North was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Connor Capece hit a slow roller to shortstop that was misplayed, allowing Deters to cross with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Reliever Shea Wendt did not allow a hit as he recorded the final five outs to earn his first win (1-0) of the season.Â
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 in a home game against Omaha at 6:00 pm in Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
