Scouting Creighton (8-8)
The Bluejays have won four of their last five contests, falling only to No. 13 LSU during that stretch. Most recently, Creighton recorded its first sweep against Tulane on the road.Â
With all three games decided by two runs or less, the Bluejays began the series with a 12-inning, 8-6 victory. The next day, an early two-run offense gave Creighton its second win, 2-1.
The sweep came on Sunday, as two early home runs from Nate McHugh and Isaac Wachsmann in the first and second innings, plus a game-winning run in the ninth, helped the Bluejays claim a 5-4 decision.
Creighton roared out to a 4-2 lead by the end of the fourth inning of that final game before Tulane evened the score with two runs in the seventh. The Bluejays responded in the top of the 9th inning and Shea Wendt finished off the first sweep of the season.Â
The junior pitcher recorded the final five outs of the game, keeping Tulane held steadily hitless during that time.Â
McHugh and Wachsmann added to their growing home run lead. McHugh spearheads the team with four homers while Wachsmann sits close behind with three.
Scouting Omaha (7-10)
After finding themselves on a four-game losing streak to begin the month of March, the Mavericks most recently bounced back with a three-game sweep over North Dakota State.
In the three-game stretch with the Bison, Omaha allowed just four runs in 27 innings, posting 12 of their own during that time.
The Mavericks began the series with a 4-2 victory, scoring two runs in the seventh inning to break the 2-2 deadlock through six innings and recording their first win.
In the second game, Omaha claimed a 6-2 advantage with help from clutch pitching. The Omaha pitching staff held North Dakota scoreless for eight-of-nine innings before pitcher Camron Teinert got the win, pitching the final 2.2 innings and allowing just one hit to two strikeouts.Â
The final game saw the Bison completely stifled 2-0, as Omaha pitcher Tanner Fortsch went seven straight innings with three hits, no walks and nine strikeouts to show for it.Â
The Mavericks' offensive production in the final game came in the seventh inning, as a single down the left side from Hayden Lewis allowed the game-winning two RBI.
Jackson Trout leads Omaha's offense with a .424 batting average, recording a team-high 28 hits.Â
On the mound, Teinert's collective 7.2 innings pitched this season yielded five strikeouts and a 3.52 ERA, while Fortsch leads the team with 23 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched.
Scouting Miami (14-6)
Miami most recently picked up two of its six losses in a 2-1 series loss to Duke on the road.Â
The Hurricanes were shut out for the first time all season in the first game of the weekend matchup, as Duke powered to a 4-0 victory on the back of three runs in the fourth inning.
In the second game, Miami responded in dominant fashion to force a third-game series decider, delivering a 9-0 victory. In that game, pitcher Rob Evans recorded 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and four walks paired with five strikeouts.Â
The pitching performance was paired with eight runs in the first three innings of the second matchup, helping Miami overpower Duke from the first pitch.
Miami, however, was unable to complete the series victory, as nine runs from the Blue Devils in the fifth inning of the final game proved too much to overcome. The deciding contest came to an end in the seventh inning with a 20-10 score in favor of Duke, handing Miami its sixth loss of the season.
This season, Evans holds a 2-2 record and 3.51 ERA, pitching 25.2 innings and striking out a team-high 36 batters.
Bowron and Washburn Forcing Their Way Into the Lineup
Freshmen Joe Washburn and Nick Bowron each took advantage of spot starts to force their way into more consistent playing time. Washburn is hitting .400 with six starts in the last 10 games, while Bowron has a .375 with three appearances and two starts in the last 10 games.
Pitching Staff Rounding Into Form
In the series sweep of Tulane, the Bluejays relied on early offense and their pitching. Creighton's arms held the Green Wave to 11 runs in 29 innings to post a 3.17 ERA during the series.
Early Offense and Late Heroics
Scoring six runs in the first at bat against Tulane started a trend as the Bluejays took a lead in the opening frame in each game with the Green Wave. On the season the Bluejays have outscored the opposition 23-9 in the opening inning.Â
In addition to the first inning, Creighton plated two runs in the 12th to win the series opener and another in the ninth to win on Sunday.
Kingston Returns To Miami
Creighton head coach Mark Kingston returns to one of the places his career began. Kingston's second stop as an assistant coach was a two-year stint with the Miami Hurricanes from 2000-2001. During that time he was part of the 2001 squad to reach Omaha and claim the National Championship in Rosenblatt Stadium. Kingston now plays every home game at the new home of the MCWS, Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Bluejays Have Already Played 10 One-Run Games
Entering the home game with Omaha, Creighton has played ten one-run games. The Bluejays have won the last four one run battles, moving their mark to 6-4 in such contests.
