OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton Softball team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hang on down the stretch as the Bluejays dropped its crosstown battle with Omaha, 3-2, on Wednesday night at Connie Claussen Field.
The Bluejays fell to 15-18 overall with the loss, while the Mavericks improved to 21-7 with their fifth consecutive victory.
After two scoreless innings, Creighton broke a scoreless tie in the third, plating two runs on two hits and a Maverick error to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Junior Ashten Pierson opened the frame, reaching on a throwing error and advanced to third on a single to right from Avery Barnard. Both Pierson and Barnard would come in to score two batters later as junior Kaelan Schultz flared a two-run double down the left field line to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
Omaha immediately answered in the bottom half of the frame as the Mavericks loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a single from Bailey Sample, before scoring their first run of the game on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Mavericks would rally in the home half of the fourth, using a solo home run from Sammy Schmidt and a bases loaded RBI fielder's choice from Sample to grab a 3-2 lead.
Omaha starting pitcher Maddia Groff would close the door on the Bluejays from there, allowing two hits over the final four innings to close out the 3-2 victory.
Five different Bluejays recorded a hit in the contest with Schultz driving in the Jays lone runs of the contest. Freshman Audrey Gilman suffered the loss, despite striking out six and allowing just two runs in 6.0 innings of work.
Creighton is back in action tomorrow night when they begin a three-game series against Seattle at 5 p.m. at the new Creighton Softball Stadium.
