OMAHA, Neb. – Playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 604, the Creighton softball team fell to No. 8 Nebraska, 8-2, on Tuesday, March 31 at the Creighton Softball Stadium.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 18-19 on the year, while the Cornhuskers improved to 27-6 with the victory.
Nebraska got things going early as the first four Huskers reached base safely to jump out to a 2-0 lead. National Player of the Year candidate Jordy Frahm opened the game with an infield single while Hannah Coor drew a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second with no one out. Hannah Camenzind followed with an RBI single up the middle to put Nebraska on the scoreboard 1-0. Ava Zuszak kept thing rolling with an RBI double into the left centerfield gap to give the Cornhuskers a 2-0 lead.
Creighton answered right back in the bottom half of the second as Kaelan Schultz drew a leadoff walk, before sophomore Tara Vandewater blasted her team-high tying seventh home run of the season to knot things up at 2-2.
Bluejay starter Audrey Gilman would settle in over the next two innings, sending the contest to the fifth all level at 2-2.
Nebraska, however, regained the lead in the top of the fifth, using a single from Frahm, a double from Coor and an RBI single from Kuszak to move back out in front 3-2 lead.
The Cornhuskers extended their lead in the top of the sixth as Nebraska plated four runs on five hits to take a commanding 7-2 lead. NU was not done there as Kacie Hoffmann delivered a towering home run to right to cap off the 8-2 victory.
Vandewater led the way for the Jays with a two-run home run, while Barnard and Greenwood each collected a hit in the contest. Gilman suffered her eighth loss of the season, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Freshman Alexis Jensen, meanwhile, earned her 14th win of the season, striking out seven and allowing just one hit in 4.0 innings pitched. Hoffmann paced the Huskers with two hits, including a home run, while Frahm, Coor and Hannah Camenzind each added two hits.
Creighton will return to the field for a three-game series at Butler this weekend. Game one of the series is set for Thursday, April 2 at 2 p.m. CT.
