Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Gonzaga in Home Opener

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball split a doubleheader with Gonzaga during the Bluejays' home opener on Saturday, March 7. Creighton took the opening 2-1, but dropped a 5-4 decision in the nightcap.
Following Saturday's contest the Bluejays moved to 4-7, while Gonzaga closed the day 4-8.
Game 1: Creighton 2, Gonzaga 1
Ben North provided all the offense needed by the Bluejay pitching staff in the opener as the Creighton shortstop blasted a leadoff triple in the second, then came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Connor Capece.
Two frames later North launched his first home run of the season over the wall in left center to give the Bluejays a 2-0 edge.
Creighton starter Jack Pineau earned the win with six innings of shutout ball to move to 2-0 on the season, while reliever Jimmy Burke limited Gonzaga to one run over the final three frames to collect his first save of the season.Â
Gonzaga starter Zach Bowman took the loss (0-3), despite going the distance allowing two runs on four hits in eight innings.

Game 2: Gonzaga 5, Creighton 4
North wasted little time giving the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage with his second home run of the season and of the day in the second inning. The Bluejays added a pair of runs in the third as Capece laced a two run single into left-center to score Nate McHugh and Rocco Gump. The Creighton third baseman Gump drew a leadoff walk, while McHugh lined a single down the left field line to set the table. With two down the pair executed a double steal to set the stage for Capece.
Gonzaga evened the score with three runs on four hits in the fourth as four of the first five hitters reached safely.Â
The score remained deadlocked into the seventh when the Zags pushed across a pair. With one down and the bases full for Gonzaga, Creighton got the ground ball it was looking for, but a wild throw on the relay to first allowed the Zags to seize a 5-3 lead.
Creighton mounted a rally in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs. After a strikeout and a walk made it 5-4, an infield double play closed the game.
Bluejay reliever Jakob Ruhl took a hard luck loss (0-1), yielding two unearned runs in the seventh.
Gonzaga reliever Landon Hood earned the win (2-0) with five innings of scoreless relief, while Joe Thornton pick up the save (1). Thornton allowed one run on two hits in 1.1 frames.
Creighton and Gonzaga will play the rubber game of the three-game series at 1:00 pm on Sunday, March 8 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
