
Fast Start Propels Men’s Tennis to 4-3 Victory at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Creighton men's tennis team used a thrilling doubles win and a pair of straight set singles victories to propel the Bluejays to a 4-3 win over Marquette on Friday night at the Sprovieri Tennis Complex in Milwaukee, Wis.
With the win, Creighton captured its fifth consecutive victory over Marquette, improving its overall record to 12-12 and 3-3 in BIG EAST play, The Golden Eagles, however, fell to 4-16 overall and 1-4 in league action with the loss.
A tight and spirited doubles point saw the Bluejays grab the early advantage with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Marquette claimed the first doubles point of the match, securing a 6-3 win at the top doubles spot, before senior Yuma Daijima and sophomore Rocky Mckenzie rallied the Jays with a 6-4 victory on the No. 2 doubles court to level the match. With all eyes on senior Zachary Kuo and freshman Mathis Dahler on the No. 3 court, the dynamic duo delivered a 7-6 (13-11) tie-breaking win to clinch the doubles point and give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
Daijima built upon the Bluejays momentum, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 straight sets victory on the No. 2 singles court to extend the Bluejays lead to 2-0.
Marquette answered immediately with a pair of straight set wins of their own at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions to level the contest at 2-2.
Creighton regained the advantage moments later as Dahler edged out Remi St. Laurent with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in three-sets win on the No. 4 singles court, before Kuo then clinched the overall dual with a 6-4, 6-1 straight sets win at the No. 5 singles spot.
With the match already in hand, Marquette's Hugh Perrill claimed a 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 three-sets win on the No. 6 singles court to trim the deficit to 4-3.
The Bluejays will wrap up the regular season on Sunday afternoon when they take on DePaul at 1 p.m. in Chicago.
