EVANSVILLE, Ind. For the first time this season the seventh-ranked Creighton men's soccer team lost to an opponent outside of the top-25, falling at Evansville by a 2-1 tally on Friday night. The loss snaps the Bluejays' six-match winning streak and marks the first time in 11 matches CU allowed more than one goal.
The Purple Aces (5-12-1, 3-5-0 MVC) took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Jay Fankam scored his third goal of the year. His 17 yard blast was assisted by Ian McAuley.
The Bluejays (12-3-0, 6-2-0 MVC) evened the match when Vince Odorisio scored his sixth goal of the year in the 70th minute. The junior's goal, a diving header, was assisted by Matt Wieland and Kama Bennah.
The match appeared to be headed for overtime, tied at one late in regulation, but with just over one minute remaining the Aces struck. Dan Bigham scored when he headed in a corner kick with only one minute and 19 seconds to play in the match.
The Bluejays out-shot the Aces, 19-13, in the match, including 10 shots on goal. Corey Southers, the UE goalkeeper, turned away nine CU shots for the win. Matt Allen suffered his first collegiate loss, playing the final 45 minutes of the match. Andrew Brown started in goal and allowed one score, while stopping one shot. CU also worked the Aces for six corner kicks, including five in the first half.
The loss gives the Jays two losses in MVC play for the first time since 2001. The defeat also snapped a five-match winning streak against the Aces and dropped the Jays' all-time mark against UE to 12-3-0.
CU will look to rebound from its first loss in four weeks when it travels to face Southwest Missouri State on Sunday afternoon to conclude the regular season. The Bears lost to Drake, 2-1, on Friday night. SMS and CU will kickoff at 1 p.m. in Springfield, Mo., on Sunday in the season finale.
