LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Two defensive miscues led to a Creighton men's soccer loss, 2-1, to 18th-ranked Washington Sunday afternoon in the final match of the UNLV FILA Invitational. The 13th-ranked Bluejays allowed two easy goals in the second half and dropped their first match of the young season, falling to 3-1-0 on the year.
The Bluejays and Huskies (4-1-0) played an evenly matched, scoreless first half. Both teams had quality scoring opportunities, with UW logging more shots, but the Jays attempting more corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
The Huskies then tallied a score five minutes into the second half. Brett Hite took a long throw in from Casey Armstrong and was wide open in the box. Hite had time to settle the ball and beat CU goalkeeper Andrew Brown for the first goal of the game at the 50:24 mark.
The CU defense once again missed their marks when Evan Cummings was able to get a shot off and then get his own rebound and put it in the back of the net in the 55th minute.
"It was a hard fought game and we lost to a quality team which will win a lot of games this year," Head Coach Bob Warming said after the loss. "We had two really bad defensive blunders which cost us the game. It was an incredibly hot game, but we certainly had enough chances to score and win on the other end. It's a good lesson for our guys, because we are going to face tough opponents throughout the remainder of the season."
Brian Biggerstaff scored his second goal of the season for the Jays lone offensive output. The junior collected a rebound and put it away from about eight yards out in the 84th minute.
Brown made four saves in the defeat, moving his record to 3-1-0 on the season.
The Bluejays will return to Omaha in search of a new winning streak when they play host to Wisconsin this Friday. The Jays and Badgers will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. at the Creighton Soccer Field on Sept. 17. CU then bounces back to play Marquette on Sunday as part of the annual Ameritas Classic.
