OMAHA, Neb. ? Freshman Tim Bohnenkamp provided an assist and the game-winning goal as the Creighton men's soccer team defeated Marquette 2-1 at the Creighton Soccer Field in the Ameritas Classic finale Sunday afternoon. The 16th-ranked Bluejays improve to 5-1-0 on the season, including a perfect 4-0-0 home mark.
Marquette (1-4-0) jumped on the scoreboard first when a questionable penalty kick was granted the Golden Eagles. Chris Lee attempted and converted the PK for the Eagles at the 4:50 mark to give Marquette a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays responded quickly as Kama Bennah scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the 10th minute. Bennah blasted a low shot past Marquette goalkeeper Stephen Grow, after Grow had punched out a crossing pass from Bohnenkamp. Bennah, making his first start of the season scored at 9:39 in the first half.
The score remained even until the 74th minute. Brett Rodriguez started the game-winning play near midfield with a high lofted pass to Jarod Tarver. Tarver advanced the ball into the box and crossed it. Freshman Tony Schmitz made an effort for the ball, distracting the MU goalkeeper while allowing Bohnenkamp to bang home the game-winner. Rodriguez and Tarver were credited with assists on Bohnenkamp's second goal of the weekend at the 73:44 mark.
Freshman Matt Allen made his first collegiate start in goal for the Bluejays. The rookie - who should be a senior in high school this fall - recorded one save and broke up several crossing passes to earn his first career win.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak against the Eagles, improving CU's all-time record against Marquette to 3-5-0. The Jays captured the Ameritas Classic tournament title for the second time in three seasons and improved to 20-5-1 all-time in the 14th annual affair.
Creighton returns to the pitch next Saturday when it plays host to Air Force. The Falcons and Bluejays will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. at the Creighton Soccer Field (19th and California). For ticket information call 402-280-JAYS.
