SOUTH BEND, Ind. For the fourth time in the last six seasons, the Creighton men's soccer team opened the year by playing a double overtime contest. This year the eighth-ranked Bluejays lost their season-opener for the first time since 1995, as 12th-ranked Indiana headed in the game-winning goal in the 107th minute, giving IU a 1-0 victory over the Jays (0-1-0) Friday at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament hosted by Notre Dame.
Brian Ackley knocked in a header off of a John Michael Hayden corner kick at 106:32 to secure the Hoosier victory. Indiana (1-0-0) out-shot the Bluejays 22-6 and attempted 16 corner kicks in the victory. The shot differential (16) was the largest by a Bluejay foe since Bradley out-shot the Jays 24-6 in a 1-0 CU victory on Oct. 8, 2004. The Hoosiers' 16 corner kicks were the most by a Bluejay opponent since SMU had 16 in the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship match.
The Bluejay defense held off the IU attack for a majority of the match, with junior goalkeeper Matt Allen stopping five of the six shots on goal he faced for the Jays. IU held a 12-2 shots advantage in the second half and out-shot the Jays 4-2 in the overtime periods.
The CU offense could never amount much of an attack, as it put just three shots on goal and only one player - Byron Dacy - attempted more than one shot in the loss. The loss drops the Bluejays to 7-1-3 all-time in season-openers under head coach Bob Warming.
The loss also ended a streak of CU overtime matches which ended in ties. The last CU overtime match which did not end even was a 2-1 Bluejay win over Vanderbilt on Oct. 17, 2003, a span of six straight overtime draws since. It also marks the first overtime loss for the Bluejays since falling 2-1 to Loyola Marymount on Sept. 7, 2003.
Creighton will look to rebound from its season-opening defeat when it takes on tournament host and 15th-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday at 1 p.m.
