DES MOINES,
Drake was the first team on the scoreboard at the 21:22 mark, as the Bluejays caught a bad break when an attempted clear went in for an own goal.
Creighton was quick to answer, as the Bluejays' leading scorer Gans evened the score at 1-1 only 1:08 later. Gans found an opening on the left side of the box and sent an eight-yarder past Bulldog goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder. The goal was the fifth of the season for Gans and the 15th of her career.
The Bluejays took the lead just before half in the 43rd minute, when Bailey headed home a goal off of a corner kick by senior Heather Duncan. The goal was the first of Bailey's career on only the fourth shot of the season for the defender.
Creighton escaped a near goal by the Bulldogs in the 31st minute when Drake's Melissa Lewis hit the crossbar. The teams entered halftime even in shots, with seven apiece.
Neither team scored in the second half as the Jays were able to clamp down defensively to preserve the victory. Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey came up big with all three of her saves in the second stanza.
Both teams recorded 13 shots in the match, although the Jays held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Junior Lindsay Vaught led Creighton with three shots (one on goal), followed by fellow junior Nicole DeLue's two shots (both on goal).
“This was our best game so far this year,” said head coach Bruce Erickson. “We played with confidence and had the better chances. We played inspired soccer tonight.”
NOTES: Creighton improves to 6-0-0 when Marcy Gans scores a point this season... Gans has team-bests with 15 career goals and 40 career points... The win gives the Jays a 5-4-0 advantage in the all-time series... The victory was CU's first-ever in
