TEMPE, Ariz. The Creighton softball team was held scoreless for the first time this season in a 4-0 loss at No. 3/6 Arizona State Wednesday. The Sun Devils (22-2) held the Bluejays (8-4) to just four hits, while the Jays dropped their third straight game to a top-five opponent on their Spring Break trip to Arizona.
ASU broke into the scoring column with a two-out infield RBI hit by Jackie Vasquez in the third inning. The Sun Devils, a Women's College World Series participant last year, plated three more runs in the fifth inning, chasing Bluejay starter Tara Oltman. Jessica Mapes singled to start the fifth for ASU and Vazquez then reached base on an error by Bailey Dawson. The Sun Devils loaded the bases with no outs on an infield single by Kaitlin Cochran. Bianca Cruz followed with an RBI single to make the score 2-0.
With the bases still loaded and nobody out, Amanda Hess relieved Oltman in the circle. Hess induced a ground ball to third which cut down the runner at the plate for the first out. The Arizona native then walked ASU's third run across the plate and allowed a sacrifice fly to push the score to 4-0 before recording a strike out to end the inning.
The Bluejays put two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning but could not cross the plate. Senior Jessica German reached on a one-out error by the Sun Devil first baseman and then one out later Caitlin Marcano doubled to put runners at second and third with two outs. CU's leading hitter entering the game Lau Emmsley-Chang (.435), grounded out to end the game however.
Oltman dropped to 5-2 on the year in the loss. She pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs on eight hits. Hess pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit, while walking two and striking out three.
ASU freshman hurler Megan Elliott moved to 11-1 with the complete game win. She struck out eight Bluejays and allowed just four hits. No Sun Devil hitter had more than one base hit off Bluejay pitching.
Creighton returns to play this Saturday when it plays in a newly scheduled doubleheader at Northern Colorado at 1:00 p.m. (CST). The Jays will also play a single game against UNC on Sunday at noon (CST).
