OMAHA, Neb. - Senior defender Sam Russell scored 11 minutes into the match and the Creighton women's soccer team never looked back, as the Bluejays defeated South Dakota, 3-0, Tuesday night at Morrison Stadium. Creighton (3-1-0) dominated the match offensively, as the Jays fired 22 shots with 10 on goal.
After Creighton put two shots on goal in the first five minutes, Russell was able to give the Jays the early lead with her second career goal. Fellow senior Katy Peetz sent a crossing pass that hit the crossbar and bounced directly to Russell, who fired it to the far post from 12 yards out.
Creighton went into halftime with the 1-0 lead, but the Jays missed numerous scoring chances as they out-shot South Dakota, 14-4, in the period. In the 16th minute, Marcy Gans had a goal nullified by an offsides penalty for the second match in a row, which would have given the Jays a two-goal cushion.
Gans was able to get redemption in the 67th minute, however, as she created space with the dribble and beat USD goalkeeper Ann Opsahl to the far post from eight yards out. Gans was set up by a Nicole DeLue crossing pass.
In the 83rd minute, sophomore reserve Shawn Magrum was able to find the back of the net in her first action of the season to give the Jays a comfortable 3-0 lead. Magrum fired a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal after superb passes from sophomore Anne Peetz and junior Lindsay Vaught set her up in front of the net.
Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey turned away the only shot she faced during the match, as she picked up her second shutout of the season. Opsahl made six saves in the match for South Dakota (3-2-2), to make the match appear much closer than it really was. Gans led the way for Creighton with six shots, while Vaught, Eden Hingwing, Grace Kwon, and Jordan Bruch contributed two apiece.
“Overall I was pleased with the win, but we still need to be better in front of the goal,” said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson, noting the numerous close-range opportunities the Jays had. “Give credit to USD, they played hard and were organized.”
Creighton will travel to the Dakotas for two weekend matches, starting with a 4 p.m. match at North Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 14. The Jays will then play at South Dakota State on Sunday, Sept. 16.
