NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Junior Marcy Gans' goal in the 62nd minute was all the Creighton women's soccer team needed as the Bluejays defeated Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. The goal was the second of the season for Gans, and her second game winner in as many matches, as Creighton improves to 2-0-0 on the season.
The teams played to a scoreless first half with Creighton holding the advantage in shots, 6-3. The Jays' Lindsay Vaught put the only shot on goal for either team in the half with less than three minutes remaining, but was turned back by Ladyjack goalkeeper Crystin Pactor.
The Jays had three excellent scoring opportunities within a four minute time span early in the second half. Freshman Emily Orbell directed a shot on goal in the 58th minute and Vaught followed with a header attempt that was saved by Pactor in the 60th minute. The third time was a charm, however, as Gans beat Pactor at the 61:01 mark to give the Jays the lead.
The goal was set up by senior Katy Peetz, who won the ball at the top of the box, beat a defender and found an open Gans in front of the net. Gans turned and fired a shot past Pactor into the lower right corner of the goal for the eventual game winner.
Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey (2-0-0) denied the Ladyjacks on their only shot on goal, an Amanda Alders shot in the 55th minute. The shutout was the first of the season for Casey and the seventh of her career. Pactor (1-1-0) recorded four saves in the loss.
“In the first half, we failed to capitalize on a couple of good scoring chances,” said head coach Bruce Erickson. “We stuck to our game plan and were able to execute in the second half.”
The Jays out-shot Stephen F. Austin, 13-9, in the match led by Gans with four. Vaught, Orbell, and Katy Peetz each added two shots.
The Ladyjacks held the advantage in corner kicks, 12-5, but the Bluejay defense stiffened and now has not allowed a goal in over 170 minutes.
The back-to-back game-winning goals by Gans equals her career total entering the season, now giving her four in her career.
Creighton will return home to Morrison Stadium for a match against San Diego State on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m.
