OMAHA, Neb. - San Diego State's Jackie Ragudos scored two first-half goals to lead the visiting Aztecs to a 2-0 victory over the Creighton women's soccer team Friday night at Morrison Stadium. The Aztecs picked up their first victory of the season to improve to 1-1-1, while the Bluejays suffer their first defeat and are now 2-1-0.
Ragudos scored in the match's 13th minute on a give-and-go with teammate Alicia Piz. Ragudos found the bottom right side of the goal from seven yards out after receiving the return pass from Piz.
The match's turning point occurred in the 39th minute, when Creighton's Marcy Gans received a pass from senior Toch Ihemelu and netted what appeared to be the game-tying goal. However, the goal was denied by a disputed offsides call.
Less than two minutes after the near Creighton goal, Ragudos struck again to extend the SDSU lead to 2-0. Ragudos created space with the dribble and fired a blast from 16 yards to the upper right corner of the goal.
Creighton fought hard out of the gates in the second half and had two outstanding scoring opportunities. In the 55th minute, Gans found herself to the left of the net and sent a shot to the right corner past Aztecs goalkeeper Aubree Southwick, but a SDSU defender was there to clear the ball and deny the goal. Then in the 76th minute, Sam Russell re-directed a shot by Heather Duncan from point-blank range but was turned back by Southwick.
The Aztecs out-shot Creighton, 15-9, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Jays out-corned SDSU, 6-1, but were unable to capitalize.
Southwick picked up her first career victory in goal, as the freshman improved to 1-1-1 with the shutout. Goalkeeper Kristen Casey (2-1-0) suffered her first defeat of the season in goal for the Jays, but did record a season-high five saves.
“The offsides call (denying the Gans goal) was a critical point in the match,” said head Coach Bruce Erickson, pointing out the second Aztec goal soon after.
“We let them get comfortable in the middle, and they made us pay. We made adjustments at halftime and played better in the second half, but we didn't put away our scoring chances,” said Erickson.
Creighton will host Division II South Dakota on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. The Coyotes are coached by former Bluejay player and assistant coach Becky Heiberger.
