Macomb, Ill. - The women's soccer snapped Western Illinois' 14-game home unbeaten streak Tuesday, with a 2-0 win in Macomb, Ill.
Creighton scored one goal in each half, with the first coming in the 10th minute as Marcy Gans scored her 12th goal of the season. Gans ripped a shot from about 25 yards out that the goalkeeper was not able to hang onto.
The second Bluejay goal came in the 72nd minute as Emily Orbell scored her fourth goal of the season. The goal was the second in as many games for the reigning MVC Rookie of the Year.
In goal, Kristen Casey turned away three shots to post her fourth shutout of the year, and the 17th of her career. With 17 career shutouts, Casey moves into a tie for fourth on the all-time Creighton shutout list, tying Maggie Phelan who played from 1997-2000.
The Bluejays were able to get some different players involved in the game, as two players saw their first collegiate action. Freshmen Carey Dahlquist and Ariel Rank each got playing time, playing 18 and 52 minutes respectively.
“It was a good game,” Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson said. “We wanted to get out of it with a win and stay healthy in the process, and we accomplished both of those goals today.”
With the win, the Bluejays reached the 10-win mark for the sixth time in Erickson's 10-year tenure, moving to 10-4-0 on the season.
Creighton will wrap up its three-game roadtrip on Sunday, when the team returns to conference action, taking on Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
