Omaha, Neb. - The women's soccer team fell 5-2 to Evansville on Saturday at Morrison Stadium. Senior Nicole DeLue, who was honored before the game as part of Senior Day, scored her fourth goal of the season.
Defensively Creighton was able to hold Evansville's two highest goal scorers, coming into the game, in check. Kayla Lambert and Mia Tofano, who rank second and third respectively in the MVC in goal scoring, were each held without a goal. Unfortunately for the Bluejays, Evansville senior forward, Rocky Hearst had a career day for the Purple Aces, scoring four goals on the afternoon.
Creighton was able to get off to a good start, as DeLue scored in the third minute. She sent a shot into the top left corner for the first goal of the game. After Evansville answered in the 18th minute, Mary Zapapas scored her fourth goal of the season as well, as Marcy Gans tapped a pass back to her in front of the net, as Zapapas gave the Bluejays a 2-1 advantage.
However Evansville would do the rest of the scoring as Hearst proceeded to score four unanswered goals, with her first coming with just 35 seconds to go in the first half.
Hearst's four goals were a home field single-game record by an opponent. The previous record was three goals scored by D. Garrett of SMU at Tranquility Park on Oct. 13, 1995. The five goals scored by Evansville was the most goals by a Creighton opponent at Morrison Stadium. Western Michigan previously scored five on Northern Iowa on Sept. 8, 2006.
“First of all, nobody scores five goals on us,” Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson said. “The part I'm having the most problem with, is that we just let down. We come out and score the first goal, and get on them, and then we just didn't compete.”
Creighton will wrap up its regular season on Thursday in Cedar Falls, Iowa as it plays Northern Iowa at 3:00 p.m.
