RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Creighton softball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a pair of victories at the UC Riverside Tournament Friday. The Bluejays defeated Northern Colorado 6-3 in the first game of the event and then knocked off Loyola Marymount 4-1 to finish off their first doubleheader sweep of the young season.
In the opener both schools plated three runs in the first inning. After the opening frame, Bluejay freshman starter Emily Humpal settled down and did not allow another run in a complete game victory. The rookie right-hander allowed just four hits and the three first inning runs, as she walked two and struck out 11 for her first career victory. Humpal also added a double and two RBI at the plate.
The Bluejays took the lead with a three-run third inning. TJ Eadus finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the Jays against UNC (1-5).
Creighton then faced 2007 NCAA Tournament participant and defending Pacific Coast Softball Conference champion LMU (4-2) in the second game of the day.
CU again surrendered an unearned run in the first inning, before battling back for the victory.
The Jays took the lead when California native Laura Kratochvil ripped a bases-loaded, pinch-hit single to drive in a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Jays padded their lead when Renae Sinkler connected for a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Sophomore hurler Tara Oltman (3-1) picked up her third win of the season in convincing fashion. She did not allow an earned run and struck out 11 in the victory.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday when it faces San Diego and then again LMU.
