RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Creighton softball concluded a perfect weekend at the UC Riverside Tournament with an eight-inning 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount (4-3) Saturday afternoon. The Bluejays went 4-0 at the event to move to 6-2 on the year.
For the second straight day sophomore pitcher Tara Oltman (4-1) dominated the reigning Pacific Coast Softball Conference champions in the circle. The right-hander tossed all eight innings, scattering eight singles and a double, while walking none and striking out nine. In two games against LMU this weekend, the Beatrice (Neb.) High product struck out 20, walked two and allowed just one earned run in 15 innings of work.
LMU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Lions used back-to-back two-out base hits to score the game's first run.
The Bluejays pulled even in the fifth. Senior Mary Egan walked to start the frame and was followed by a Jessica Wakasugi bunt single. After a strike out and a fielder's choice, the Jays still had runners at first and second with two outs when Michelle Koch singled to right field, driving in Wakasugi from second base.
The game went to extra-innings where the international tie break rule was employed. Koch was placed at second base to start the frame and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, LMU hurler Melissa Dykema walked Michelle Graner and Emily Humpal to load the bases. Egan then coaxed a bases-loaded walk to drive in the go-ahead run. Wakasugi then reached on an infield single to add what proved to be a needed insurance run.
LMU pulled within one in the bottom of the eighth, but left the game-tying run on first as Oltman fanned Megan Ackerman to end the game.
Koch finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Wakasugi was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
The Bluejays are back in action next weekend at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville. CU opens play Friday with games against Saint Louis and Alcorn State.
