RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Creighton scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat San Diego 8-2 Saturday at the UC Riverside Tournament. The win moves the softball team to 5-2 on the season.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning to USD (1-5), the Jays went ahead with two runs in the fourth. CU's first run of the game crossed the plate on an RBI single by catcher Laura Kratochvil. The Jays then executed a double steal to plate their second run, as a pair of pinch-runners combined on the swipes. Jess Stigge took second while Liz McKewon came out of her flex spot in the lineup to run and stole home to put CU up 2-1.
The Toreros tied the game at 2-2 with a tally in the top of the sixth.
CU responded with a six-run sixth. After designated player TJ Eadus led off with a single, Renae Sinkler followed with a home run to put the Jays ahead 4-2. Emily Humpal drew a one-out walk and was followed by a double off the bat of Mary Egan to put two runners in scoring position for Jessica Wakasugi. The slap-hitter pushed an RBI single through the left side to push the CU lead to three. A few batters later, Michelle Graner knocked two runs in on a single through the left side. An RBI single by Sinker in her second at bat of the inning concluded scoring.
CU banged out 11 hits in the game, with four players collecting two hits each. Sinkler finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Eadus, Wakasugi and Michelle Koch each finished 2-for-3 in the game.
Humpal picked up the win in the circle for CU, tossing three innings in relief. She allowed just two hits and a run, while striking out two in improving to 2-0 on the year. Amanda Hess started and lasted four innings, giving up four hits and one earned run.
The Bluejays are back in action to conclude play at the event against Loyola Marymount at approximately 4 p.m. (CST).
