
Softball Splits Doubleheader at Arkansas Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? The Creighton softball team ran its winning streak to seven with a 5-4 triumph over Northern Colorado Sunday morning at the Arkansas Invitational, before falling 7-2 to the host Lady Razorbacks in the afternoon. The Bluejays are 9-3 on the season after the doubleheader split.
In the openerNorthern Colorado (2-13) jumped on top with two runs in the top of the second inning. A leadoff double by Mackenzie Barrett set the stage. Barrett would come around to score on a one-out double by Kelli Henderson. After two walks by Bluejay starting pitcher Emily Humpal loaded the bases, UNC scored its second run on a Bluejay error with two outs.
The Jays evened the game in their half of the second. Michelle Graner reached on a one-out walk and stole second. She was then followed by a walk to Humpal and a single by pinch-hitter Kristi Meneely to load the bases with one out. Jessi Jadlowski was then issued a bases-loaded walk to plate the first CU run. Bailey Dawson drove in the second run on single to second and the score was 2-2 after two.
UNC took a 3-2 lead with a run in the second, but the Jays again answered with a tally in their half of the inning. Amanda Hess came on in relief of Humpal in the third after the Bears scored their third run.
Graner's single in the third drove in Renae Sinkler, who had walked to lead off the inning.
Creighton took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning.Dawson walked to lead off and came around to score on a Sinkler RBI single. Graner walked with the bases loaded to drive in the second run of the inning and put CU up 5-3.
UNC's Morgan Dahlman led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run, chasing Hess from the circle. Tara Oltman came on to pick up her first save of the season, closing the door on the Bears.
The Bluejays had just four hits in the game, but walked 12 times, including three issued to Graner.
Hess (2-1) picked up the win, tossing 3.1 innings of relief. The senior right-hander allowed just two hits, one run, walked none and struck out four. Oltman allowed one hit in five batters faced for the save. Humpal took a no decision after allowing three runs ? two earned ? and four hits in 2.2 innings of work.
In the night cap, the host school continued its hottest start in program history, moving to 14-2 with a 7-2 win over the Bluejays.
Arkansas jumped on CU starter, Tara Oltman, for four runs in the first inning.
The Bluejays cut the lead in half when Graner crushed a two-run home run in the second inning.
The Lady Razorbacks tacked on a run in the second and two more in the fourth to hand the Jays a five-run loss.
Oltman, who had allowed four earned runs through her first 40.2 innings of work this year, was tagged for seven earned runs in four innings pitched againstArkansas Sunday. The right-hander dropped to 5-2 in the loss, allowing eight hits, seven runs, three walks and striking out five.
Katy Henry (9-0) struck out 12 Bluejay batters and allowed just four hits in the Lady'Back win.
The Bluejays return to the diamond Friday when they being their Spring Break trip at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational inTempe , Ariz. The Jays will face San Jose State and BYU Friday.
