TEMPE, Ariz. ? The Bluejay battery of TJ Eadus and Tara Oltman powered the Creighton softball team to an 8-0 victory over San Jose State in the first game of the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational hosted by Arizona State Friday morning. Eadus smashed two home runs and drove in five runs, while Oltman struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in the shutout victory.
Sophomore right fielder Jessi Jadlowski led off the game with a double to left field and would come around to score when Eadus, an Arizona native, crushed a home run to center field to give the Jays a 2-0 lead after one.
The Bluejays scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control of the game. Michelle Graner led off the frame with a walk and would later score on an RBI single by freshman Liz McKewon. An RBI single by Bailey Dawson made the score 4-0. Dawson's hit was followed by Eadus' second homer of the day, a three-run blast to center field to put CU up 7-0 after two innings.
While the CU offense cruised, so did Oltman in the circle. The sophomore right-hander fanned 10 and did not allow a hit until Kayla Hayes smacked a single through the right side to lead off the fifth inning for the Spartans (7-8). That proved to be the only hit SJSU would manage off of Oltman (6-2). She finished the one-hit shutout with two walks and 10 Ks.
The game was cut short in the sixth inning due to the run-rule. Dawson's bases-loaded two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in Jessica Wakasugi with the game's eighth and decisive run.
Eadus finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI on her pair of round trippers. The senior catcher had just three RBI through 12 games before Friday's first game.
Dawson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. McKewon snapped out of a slump at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored from the ninth spot in the order. The rookie had started her career 1-for-21 in her first 12 games before Friday morning.
Creighton is 10-3 heading into Friday afternoon's game against BYU.
