DENTON, Texas - After posting an exciting walk-off win in its season-opener, the Creighton softball team was held to just one hit in a 3-0 loss to North Texas Saturday afternoon at the North Texas Invitational.
UNT (1-0) hurler Kristina Fowler held the Bluejays to just one hit in dealing Creighton (1-1) its first shutout loss of the year. Michelle Graner's double to lead off the second inning proved to be all the offense the Jays could muster off of the senior right-hander. Fowler walked three and struck out four in the win for UNT. Creighton was held scoreless in just four games all of last season.
North Texas got on the board in the fourth inning off of Bluejay starter Amanda Hess. A leadoff walk to Kadie Platt was followed by a two-run home run by Katya Muller to put the Mean Green up 2-0 after four. UNT added an insurance run in the sixth inning, when another walk by Hess led to the third run of the game for UNT.
Hess (0-1) allowed just one hit in five innings of work, but suffered the loss after issuing four walks and striking out five. Freshman and Texas native Emily Humpal made her collegiate debut in the circle, relieving Hess in the sixth inning. The rookie right-hander allowed an inherited run to score, but surrendered just one hit and struck out three in two full innings of work.
Creighton concludes its opening weekend on Sunday when it faces Tulsa at 10 a.m. and has a rematch with Texas State at 12:30 p.m.
