OMAHA, Neb. -- Shortstop Renae Sinkler went 3-for-3 and scored a run to lead the Creighton softball team to a 2-1 win over North Dakota State in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex, but the Bison rallied behind Melissa Chmielweski to capture the nightcap, 5-3. Tara Oltman improved to 10-4 on the season with the win in the circle in the opener, surpassing the 100-strikeout mark for the season. Amanda Hess (3-4) suffered the loss in game two as the Bluejays moved to 15-10 on the season.
In game one, it was Sinkler putting the Jays ahead early as she led off the second inning with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Mary Egan and then scored on an RBI groundout by Lau Emmsley-Chang.
The Jays added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as it was Sinkler again starting the rally with a leadoff single. Pinch runner Jess Stigge was moved to second on Egan's second sacrifice and then scored on an error by NDSU second baseman Laurel Pipken. Pinch hitter Kristi Meneely hit a ball up the middle of the infield for a single, but a misplay by Pipken allowed Stigge to come around to score.
NDSU's Chmielewski launched a solo home run in the top of the seventh to cut the CU lead back to one run, and was followed by a single and a walk. With two outs and runners on first and second base, Oltman struck out pinch hitter Kelly Vivant to end the game.
Oltman struck out eight batters in the seven-inning complete game outing, moving her season strikeout total to 101. Two of the three hits she allowed in the game came in the seventh inning. Bekki Rasmussen (5-4) suffered the defeat in the circle as she allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Game two was dominated by the bat of NDSU's Chmielewski. The first baseman homered twice, including a three-run shot in the top of the sixth inning to give the Bison a 5-0 lead. Creighton rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but with the tying run at second base, Laura Kratochvil grounded out to end the comeback hopes.
The seventh-inning rally was aided by an error and two walks, the second being a bases-loaded free pass to third baseman Michelle Graner. Catcher TJ Eadus then ripped a double to the wall in left-center field to score two runs before Kratochvil's game-ending groundout.
Allison Baake (14-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits with five walks. She did not allow an earned run and struck out five in the contest. Hess lasted four innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Freshman Emily Humpal threw the final three innings, allowing four runs on three hits, including both homers to Chmielewski.
Creighton will open conference play this weekend, with a scheduled three-game series at Illinois State.
