OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton baseball team scored a combined 25 runs Sunday in completing a four-game series sweep of Chicago State, taking both games of a doubleheader at the Creighton Sports Complex, 16-2 in game one and 9-0 in the nightcap. The Bluejays improved to 11-4 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 3-11.
The Bluejays jumped to early leads in both contests as neither was in doubt for very long. Robbie Knight and Joe Servais were each 4-for-6 on the day, while Vicente Cafaro tallied four hits, four runs and five RBIs. Creighton out-hit CSU by a combined 31-7 margin in the doubleheader.
Game one saw Creighton score a season-high 16 runs, starting with a five spot in the second inning. CU recorded three of its eight extra base hits in the game in the second frame. Designated hitter T.J. Roemmich led off the inning with a triple to left center field, the first of four three-baggers in the game for the Jays to tie a single-game school record. Roemmich then scored on a double by Servais.
Shortstop Elliot Soto notched CU's second triple in the inning, then crossed home along with Knight on a three-run home run by Cafaro. The round tripper was Cafaro's first as a Bluejay, as he paced the team with four RBIs in the contest. Creighton added three more runs in the third inning to push its lead to 8-0, as Cafaro, Soto and first baseman Darin Ruf each notched RBI singles.
Creighton tallied one more run in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the sixth inning to reach its season-high run total. Servais picked up an RBI single in the fourth, while right fielder Nick Nordgren blasted his team-leading fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning. Back-to-back triples from Servais and Brett Mieras ignited CU in the sixth, followed by RBIs from Ian Dike, Jimmy Swift and Roemmich. Servais finished the game a home run shy of the cycle.
Starting pitcher Mike Nihsen (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for Creighton, allowing one earned run on three hits in five innings. Senior Kevin Dooley and junior Josh Gow combined to pitch two scoreless innings of relief. CSU tallied its only two runs of the four-game series in the third inning, getting RBI singles from Thomas Creal and Josh Appelbaum. Cougar starting pitcher Simeon Morgan (0-1) surrendered nine runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings, while reliever William Lawrence gave up the remaining seven runs in 2.1 innings.
Game two was dominated by Creighton from the beginning, as the first four batters in the bottom of the first tallied hits. A two-run double by Ruf put the Jays ahead 2-0, followed by an RBI singles by third baseman Steve Winkelmann and Mieras. CU's first three hitters in the lineup finished a combined 7-for-10 with seven runs in the contest.
Creighton tallied three more runs in the second inning, as Knight led off with a double and came around on a run-scoring single by Cafaro. An RBI groundout by Nordgren and another run-scoring double by Servais left the Jays with a 7-0 lead after the third. CU concluded its scoring with two runs in the fourth. Redshirt freshman Josh Perreault notched his first career hit and RBI to score Ruf, while pinch hitter Tony Pechek drove in Swift with a fielder's choice. Swift finished Sunday's games with three hits in three at bats in a reserve role.
The pitching duties in the nightcap were handled by the Bluejay bullpen, as six pitchers combined for the shutout. Left-hander Roemmich (1-0) picked up the win in a pre-determined two-inning start, allowing one hit in his fifth appearance of the season to lower his ERA to 0.95. The combination of Joe Bonfe, Matt Patterson, Greg Hellhake, Pat Venditte and Jack VanLeur allowed just one hit in five innings, as each threw one frame.
Creighton improved to 8-0 in doubleheaders this season, completing its fourth sweep. The team currently maintains a 30-game winning streak in doubleheaders, which equates to 15 consecutive sweeps.
The Bluejays will remain at home for two mid-week games before opening conference play next weekend at Missouri State. Creighton will host Northern Colorado at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Creighton Sports Complex.
