OMAHA, Neb. ? Creighton pounded out 24 hits and scored 18 runs in a doubleheader softball sweep of UMKC Tuesday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex, winning 7-1 and 11-1 to move its mark to 21-10 on the year. Sophomore second baseman Michelle Koch appears to have fully recovered after missing 15 games with an injury, as she went 5-for-6 with five RBI in the twin bill.
In the opener, CU struck first with a tally in the second inning. Renae Sinkler connected for a one-out double and would come around to score on Koch's first hit of the day. CU added a pair of runs in the third inning as TJ Eadus led off the frame with her team-best seventh home run of the year. Michelle Graner coaxed a one-out walk and would move all the way around the bases on three separate wild pitches by UMKC starter Samantha Hurst to give CU a 3-0 lead after three.
A pair of walks issued to UMKC led to the Kangaroos (3-20) only run of game one, as Alicia Baker led off the fourth inning with a free pass and crossed the plate on a ground rule double by Lauren Cross. The two-bagger was UMKC's only hit of the game.
Koch led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple and scored when Liz McKewon followed with a single. McKewon would later score on an RBI single by Bailey Dawson. Cassidy Nee's two-run single in the sixth concluding scoring for the Jays as they would take game one 7-1.
Creighton starter Tara Oltman struck out seven, allowed one hit and one run in six innings to move to 14-4 this spring. Amanda Hess relieved and tossed a hitless seventh inning.
In the nightcap, CU wasted little time in jumping all over the Kangaroos, scoring four in the first inning. Jessi Jadlowski singled to start the game and moved to second on a one-out single by Eadus. One out later, Sinkler lifted a towering fly ball to left field which was misplayed by Amanda Kinn, and the Jays scored two runs on the wind-aided double. Graner walked and Jessica Wakasugi loaded the bases with a bunt single. Koch then ripped a single to center field to plate two more runs and CU led 4-0 after an inning.
UMKC's Julie Hartung connected for a two-out homer in the second inning, but Dawson answered with a solo shot of her own in CU's half of the second. The homer was Dawson's fourth of the year.
CU continued its offensive onslaught in the third, as Graner led off with a double down the left field line. Koch stayed hot and smashed her first home run of the year over the center field fence, a two-run blast, and the Jays were up 7-1 after three innings.
The Jays used a sacrifice fly by Laura Kratochvil, an RBI triple by Mary Egan, a fielder's choice RBI by Kristi Meneely and an RBI ground out by McKewon to tack on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth as CU would score at least once in each of its four at bats in the game.
The game was halted after five innings with the Jays up 11-1. Freshman Emily Humpal picked up her first career home victory, as the right-hander tossed all five frames, allowing four hits and a run, with one walk and three strike outs to move to 3-2 on the season.
Koch went 3-for-3 with four RBI in game two, as she was one of 10 Bluejays with a base hit in the game. The Jays scored a season-high 11 runs and tied a season-best with 13 hits in the game-two victory.
Creighton improved to 43-1 all-time against the Kangaroos, while the Jays have now won six straight and nine of their last 10 overall.
The Bluejays continue their eight-game home stand on Wednesday night when they play host to in-state rival Nebraska (13-12). First pitch between the familiar foes is set for 6 p.m. at the CU Sports Complex.
