DES MOINES, Iowa - Creighton batters walked five times and were hit by five Drake pitches to help the Bluejays to an 8-0 six-inning victory in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader at Buel Field, while they smacked a season-high 15 hits and plated 12 runs in game two to sweep the twin bill with a 12-5 victory. Bailey Dawson went 4-for-5 with three RBI in the second game and Jessica Wakasugi went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the nighcap and finished the doubleheader 4-for-5. Tara Oltman picked up the victory in both contests, tossing a complete game, one-hitter in the opener.
The Bluejays opened scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning in game one. Dawson doubled to left center field to start the inning and moved to third when Renae Sinkler reached on a one-out error. Sinkler then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position for Michelle Graner. Graner drove in the first run of the game on a ground out to shortstop. Laura Kratochvil followed with an RBI single to center to put CU up 2-0 after three.
CU tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Jessi Jadlowski ripped a one-out single to right center to start the rally. Dawson was then hit by a pitch and with Sinkler at the plate, both Jadlowski and Dawson advanced to second on one of three wild pitches by Brynne Dordel in the game. Sinkler then knocked a double to left center field to drive in both base runners for a 4-0 lead.
Three Bluejay runs scored in the fifth inning, with the aid of just one hit. The Jays were hit by two pitches and walked with the bases loaded three times to plate each of the runs in the frame.
Graner connected for her second double of the game to lead off the top of the sixth inning. After advancing to third base with two outs, Jessica Wakasugi dropped down a bunt single to score Graner with the eighth run of the game.
Oltman allowed just one base hit in the ball game, a third-inning infield single, while striking out eight and walking two in the opener.
Drake scored its first runs of the day in the first inning of game two on RBI singles by Erin Mollohan and Elena Leon.
CU evened the score by scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. Michelle Koch coaxed a two-out walk and Wakasugi followed with a single through the left side. Cassidy Nee then dropped a pinch-hit double over the right fielder's head to plate both Koch and Wakasugi.
The Bulldogs would regain their two-run lead in their half of the second on a two-run home run off the bat of Susan Slycord.
Creighton answered with four runs in its next at bat to claim the lead for good. Dawson led off the third with a single and moved to second on a one-out single by Sinkler. Graner then ripped a single to center field, but Dawson was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. That hit by Graner chased Drake starting pitcher Jenna DeLong.
Game one starter Dordel relieved for the Bulldogs. The freshman left-hander struck out Kratochvil for what should have been the third out of the inning, but the Bluejay designated player reached base and Graner scored on a wild pitch. Dordel then uncorked another wild pitch to allow the tying run to cross the plate. Koch then smacked her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field, to give the Jays a 6-4 lead.
After the Bulldogs pushed a run across in the fifth inning to draw within one, another Drake wild pitch allowed a Bluejay run to score in the sixth inning, pushing CU's lead back to two runs, up 7-5 after six.
A five-run seventh inning for the Bluejays was highlighted by a three-run Dawson homer, her seventh of the year.
Oltman hurled 5.1 innings in relief of Emily Humpal in the second game. The sophomore right-hander improved to 23-6, allowing four hits, one run and striking out six in the nightcap.
Dordel (13-7) was the pitcher of record in both losses for Drake.
The Bluejays now sit at 32-13 overall and pushed their first-place Missouri Valley Conference record to 10-2. The Bulldogs dropped to 18-19 overall and 8-5 in MVC play.
Creighton continues its seven-game MVC road trip with a three-game series at Southern Illinois this weekend, starting with a Saturday noon doubleheader. Following a single game on Sunday in Carbondale, the Jays will travel to upstate to play a Monday doubleheader at Illinois State.
