CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas ? Creighton wasted a 2-0 lead and fell 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders (3-6) used small ball to push the game-winning run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, dropping Creighton to 2-2 on the season.
Sara Loeffelholz led off the second inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Graner. The Bluejay left fielder then scored when she stole home on a busted squeeze play.
The Bluejays added to their lead in the fourth inning, again keyed by Loeffelholz. The junior reached on a one-out walk, moved to second on a passed ball and on to third on Graner's fly out to center field. She scored on Lauren Larson's single and the Jays were up 2-0.
The Islanders responded in their half of the frame. Kim Connelly led off the inning with a single and Sandy Schumann followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, they both came around to score when Alejia Cain slapped a ball off of Liz McKewon's glove at third base. Only one run was earned against CU starter Kylie Hovinga.
Tara Oltman relieved Hovinga in the fourth inning and retired both batters she faced.
The Islanders took advantage of a leadoff walk in the fifth inning. Larissa Martin then moved to second on a sac bunt and moved to third on a bunt single by Stephanie Estrada. Martin scored what proved to be the winning run on a squeeze bunt by Connelly, as the home team scored without the ball leaving the infield.
Oltman suffered her second loss in two days, dropping to 1-2 on the year. She hurled 2.2 innings of relief for the Jays, allowing two hits and one earned run. Hovinga went 3.1 innings, allowed five hits, two runs, one earned run, walked one and struck out five in the no decision.
The Jays managed just three hits off of Texas A&M-CC starter Stacie Tassin (2-4). Tassin did not record a strike out, but pitched a complete game for the victory.
Creighton concludes play at the Corpus Christi Invitational on Sunday at 9 a.m. when they take on North Texas.
