CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Creighton survived a comeback attempt from North Texas, edging the Mean Green 4-3 in nine innings Sunday morning at the Corpus Christi Invitational. Bailey Dawson went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run in the Bluejays' final game at the event hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Bluejays (3-2) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, as Dawson walked to lead off the frame. She moved up to third when Renae Sinkler's sacrifice bunt was mishandled by the UNT second baseman. She then crossed the plate when Sinkler was thrown out stealing second base.
Creighton doubled its lead in the bottom of the fifth as Dawson led off the inning with her first home run of the year.
The Mean Green (2-2) were down to their final out when Kadie Platt connected for a game-tying two-run home run to tie the game in the top of the seventh.
Dawson hit a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded at third and the game moved to extra innings.
With the international tie-break rule in effect, UNT scored in the top of the eighth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Sara Loeffelholz was placed at second base to start the inning and moved to third on a sac bunt by Michelle Graner. Laura Kratochvil then smacked a single down the right field line to tie the game.
The Jays worked around an error in the top of the ninth inning to keep the score even at 3-3. Liz McKewon moved to third with one out in the bottom of the ninth. After an intentional walk to Dawson, Sinkler drove in the game-winning run with a single to left field.
Dawson finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a home run and two walks to pace the Bluejay offense. Kratochvil went 2-for-4 with an RBI as well.
All-American Tara Oltman moved to 2-2 on the young season with a nine-inning complete game effort. She allowed just four hits and two earned runs, while she walked three and struck out four.
Creighton returns to action next weekend when it plays at the Tulsa Select Festival. The Jays take on South Dakota State and Saint Louis on Friday at the event.
