TULSA, Okla. - Laura Kratochvil's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Bailey Dawson with the game-winning run, giving the Creighton softball team a 4-3 win over South Dakota State in the first game of the Tulsa Select Festival Friday. The Bluejays scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to come-from-behind for the victory.
The Jays took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Kratochvil collected the first of her three hits on the day with one out. Two batters later, Michelle Koch singled up the middle to drive home Kari Sakamoto, who had pinch-run for the Bluejay catcher after she reached base.
The Jackrabbits (1-9) went ahead in the top of the fourth inning, using three singles to push two runs across the plate. SDSU extended its lead in the fifth inning, again using three singles to load the bases and a ground out to move ahead 3-1.
Creighton cut into the SDSU lead with a run in the bottom half of the fifth. Bailey Dawson reached on a two-out single and then came around to score on Renae Sinkler's double.
Jessi Jadlowski started the CU rally in the seventh inning. Dawson attempted to sacrifice Jadlowski into scoring position, but the Jackrabbit third baseman committed an error allowing the CU shortstop to reach base and move to second, while Jadlowski was at third with no outs. With one gone, Sara Loeffelholz executed a squeeze bunt to tie the game at three. Kratochvil followed with the game-winning single, plating Dawson with the go-ahead run.
Kratochvil finished 3-for-4 with the game-winning RBI. Sinkler and Koch each finished with two hits and Dawson scored two runs in the victory.
Tara Oltman (3-2) picked up the win in relief for the Jays. The All-American allowed one hit and struck out five of the nine batters she faced in 2.2 innings. The win gives the junior 60 career wins, becoming the third Bluejay in school history with at least 60 victories.
Freshman Kylie Hovinga started and went 4.1 innings in the no-decision. She struck out six and walked none to go along with six hits and three earned runs.
