No. 7 Sooners Get by Bluejays, 5-3

NORMAN, Okla. - Bailey Dawson led off the game with a home run and Renae Sinkler extended her hitting streak to eight games, but a pair of unearned runs allowed seventh-ranked Oklahoma to knock off the Creighton softball team 5-3 Sunday at the OU Softball Complex. Creighton's scheduled game with Saint Louis on Sunday in Norman was not played because of poor weather conditions.
Dawson smacked an opposite field home run to lead off the game and give Creighton (5-5) a good start against its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season. Michelle Koch followed with a walk, Sinkler then smacked the first of her two hits on the day and Sara Loeffelholz walked to load the bases with no outs. Laura Kratochvil grounded out to third base to knock in the second Bluejay run, but the Jays stranded two on after scoring two in the first inning.
The Sooners (15-3) responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame. Lindsey Vandever's two-run single tied the game, and her run on a Katie Norris single gave OU a 3-2 lead.
The score remained unchanged until Dawson started a two-out rally in the top of the fifth. The senior shortstop singled up the middle and moved to second on Koch's single. Sinkler drove home Dawson with a single down the right field line and the game was tied at 3-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bluejays intentionally walked All-American Amber Flores to load the bases for Samantha Ricketts. Ricketts ripped a ball to first base, where Sinkler wasn't able to field it cleanly and two unearned runs scored on the play.
The Bluejays did not reach base in the sixth or seventh innings, dropping their third straight game.
Each side managed six hits in the game, with Dawson finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sinkler was 2-for-3 to move her hitting streak to eight games and her batting average to .400.
Tara Oltman (4-4) took the loss in the circle for CU, tossing all six innings. She allowed six hits and three earned runs, while striking out eight and walking 10 with a tight strike zone on the road.
Kirsten Allen (4-0) got the win for OU, fanning six and walking two in a complete game effort.
Creighton's scheduled game with Saint Louis was cancelled because of cold weather conditions in Oklahoma, as the Jays managed to play just one of four scheduled games at OU because of the poor weather this weekend.
The Jays return to action next weekend in Arizona. The Bluejays open play at the Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona on Friday with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's.
