OMAHA, Neb. - Andi Padilla pitched a no-hitter for North Dakota State as the Bison blanked Creighton 3-0 in the second game of a softball doubleheader at the Creighton Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon. The NDSU senior kept the Jays off balance and allowed only five base runners in the victory.
North Dakota State (13-11) scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Melissa Chmielewski as her high fly ball to right field carried over the fence.
The Bison added to their lead in the second inning, scoring on a wild pitch by CU starter Kylie Hovinga.
Padilla's change up kept the Bluejays (12-8) off balance all day, to improve her record to 10-5 on the season. Padilla struck out six, walked three and hit one batter in the no-hitter. A few close calls nearly erased the no-hitter late in the game. Bailey Dawson reached on an error by second baseman Laurel Pipkin in the bottom of the sixth inning, a call that could have gone either way. Renae Sinkler's short fly ball to center field was nabbed by Taylor Lynn, just off her shoe strings.
Another solid NDSU defensive play in the bottom of the seventh, kept the no-hitter, as left fielder Elisa Victa stabbed at a fly ball off the bat of Jessica Wakasugi just before it hit the turf in front of her.
Hovinga (3-3) allowed six hits in the loss, including five singles. The Bluejay freshman struck out five and walked two in the loss.
The game marked the first time CU had been no-hit since a rain-shortened 1-1 tie against Illinois State on April 22, 2007.
The loss in game two snapped a 10-game home winning streak by the Jays, dating back to last season. CU went 19-2 at home last year, with one of the two defeats also coming to NDSU in a home-opening doubleheader.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday when the Bluejays host Illinois State in a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader at noon. The Jays and Redbirds also play a single game on Sunday at noon.
