LAWRENCE, Kan. - Renae Sinkler homered in the top of the first inning and the Bluejays played with a lead for the entire game as the Creighton softball team topped Kansas 2-1 in the first of two games at Arrocha Ballpark on Wednesday. The win was CU's first at Kansas in 13 years.
Sinkler smacked a solo home run over the left field fence in the first inning to give the Jays an early lead. Her fifth home run of the year came after KU starter Val George had struck out the first two Bluejay hitters of the game on six pitches.
The Bluejays added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Jessica Waksugi led off the frame with a single up the middle and was followed by a single by Liz McKewon off the glove of George. After the pair moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Jessi Jadlowski, Bailey Dawson laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
Kansas cut the Bluejay lead in half in its last at bat, when Allie Clark connected for her fourth home run of the year to lead off the inning. CU starter Tara Oltman battled back to retire the final three KU batters and earn the victory.
McKewon finished 2-for-3 to account for two of CU's five hits in the win.
Oltman, who allowed just her third earned run in her last 78 innings pitched, improved to 13-5 with the game one victory. She surrendered just four hits, walked none and struck out eight.
George (7-9) struck out a career-high 14 for the Jayhawks, but suffered the loss.
Creighton had not won in Lawrence since a 4-3 win on April 3, 1996.
