LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior Sara Loeffelholz went 2-for-3 with two RBI in a 3-0 Creighton win at Nebraska Wednesday night. The win was CU's fourth straight at NU's Bowlin Stadium, fourth straight in the in-state series and the Jays' sixth straight overall, moving their record to 18-8 on the year, while dropping the Huskers to 25-8.
Creighton scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Michelle Graner reached base on a one-out error by Nebraska starter Molly Hill. The pitcher couldn't handle a slow comebacker to the circle and Graner was aboard for Loeffelholz. The Bluejay right fielder crushed a ball into the swirling winds in right field, where it would land at the base of the wall. Loeffelholz would end up at second base for her team-leading eighth double of the year, scoring Graner from first with the game's first run.
The Bluejays would add to their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Michelle Koch led off the inning with a double to right center field and would score on a one out single by Laura Kratochvil. Kratochvil, who advanced to second base on her single because of an NU error, would score CU's second run of the inning on a single through the left side off the bat of Loeffelholz.
Nebraska had base runners in all but one inning off of Bluejay starter Tara Oltman, but the CU ace never allowed a Husker runner past second base in her sixth shutout of the season.
Oltman scattered five singles in the complete game. She is now 15-5 on the year, tossing seven innings, walking one and striking out seven. The right-hander has won her last nine decisions and now stands alone in CU history with 72 career victories.
Loeffelholz, an Omaha native playing in her first in-state rivalry game against NU, accounted for half of CU's hits in the win.
Hill (15-5) took the loss, despite equalling her season-high with 10 strikeouts. Only one of CU's three runs were earned.
Creighton returns to Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend when they host a three-game series with Bradley. The first-place Bluejays and Braves will play a doubleheader at the CU Sports Complex at noon on Saturday and conclude the series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
NOTES: Brent Vigness now has 499 wins as Creighton's head coach ... CU is now 9-3-1 on April Fool's Day under Vigness, while they are 5-0-1 in their last six April 1 games ... CU has now defeated NU four straight times for the first time in series history ... CU is 7-3 against NU in the last 10 meetings, after losing 15 straight in the series ... Oltman has allowed just four earned runs in her last 88 innings pitched.
