TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Despite getting out-hit and striking out 17 times, the Creighton softball team improved to 11-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play with a 4-2 victory over Indiana State in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Price Field. The Jays won game one 7-0 and are now 23-9 on the season after the doubleheader sweep.
Just as it did in game one, Creighton scored in the top of the first inning to take the lead. Bailey Dawson led off the game with a single. Then with one out, Dawson would score all the way from first on an error by Indiana State left fielder Kacy Kestner on a ball hit by Renae Sinkler.
Indiana State (10-19, 2-10 MVC) scored its first run of the doubleheader in the bottom of the first inning. Katie Armour singled between a pair of walks to load the bases with one out for the Sycamores. With two outs and the bases full, Bluejay starter Kylie Hovinga walked her third batter of the inning to force in the first ISU run.
The Bluejays didn't wait long to regain the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the second. The first Bluejay run scored when Jessica Wakasugi smacked a single to left field, scoring pinch-runner Kari Sakamoto from third. Sakamoto was running for Lauren Larson, who had reached base after striking out to start the inning. Wakasugi would eventually score on an infield single by Sinkler to give the Jays a 3-1 lead. The fourth Bluejay run of the game came across the way ISU's first run did, with a bases loaded walk issued to Michelle Graner.
The Sycamores cut into the Bluejay lead with a run in the fifth inning. Shonda Garringer singled to lead off the inning and would score on a two-out double off the bat of Audrey Childress.
Creighton had a chance to add some insurance runs to its lead when it had the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the seventh inning, but ISU's Darcy Wood struck out the next three Bluejay batters to get out of the jam.
Two-time MVC Pitcher of the Year Tara Oltman relieved Hovinga in the sixth inning, allowing just one hit in two scoreless inning of relief. Oltman picked up her second save of the season for Hovinga. Hovinga improved to 5-3 on the year and 3-0 in Valley play with the win. The left-handed freshman went five innings, struck out six, allowed two runs and six hits and walked three - all in the first inning.
Wood (5-11) lost despite striking out 17 Bluejays. None of the four runs she allowed were earned in the complete game defeat. In addition to her 17 Ks, she walked six and allowed five base hits.
Creighton and Indiana State conclude their three-game series on Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST).
