TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State defeated the Creighton softball team 1-0 in Saturday's series finale at Price Field. The Sycamores scored the only run of the game in the first inning, as the Bluejays (23-10, 11-2 MVC) fell for just the second time in 13 Missouri Valley Conference games.
Meredith Simpson led off the game with a single for the Sycamores (11-19, 3-10 MVC) and moved into scoring position on a ground out. Katie Armour's one-out double drove home Simpson with what proved to be the only run of the contest.
One day after striking out 17 Bluejays and allowing four unearned runs in a 4-2 Sycamore loss, Darcy Wood was again nearly unhittable in the circle for Indiana State. The Jays managed just three base hits in the shutout defeat.
Jessica Wakasugi had a single and moved to second on an error in the second inning and Liz McKewon followed with a walk, but the Jays stranded both runners on base. CU again had singles in the third and fourth innings, but again could not get the runners home.
Creighton's last scoring chance came in the sixth inning when Renae Sinkler reached and moved to second on a one-out error. Her pinch-runner Christa Ruf advanced to third on a ground out, but CU's last runner of the game was left 60 feet from home.
Wood walked one and struck out 10, while improving to 6-11 on the season for ISU.
Tara Oltman took the loss for the Jays, dropping to 18-7 on the year. The Bluejay ace allowed just five hits, walked three and struck out five.
Both of Creighton's losses in MVC play have been 1-0 defeats, the other coming to Bradley last Saturday. Each of Creighton's last four losses have been via the shutout, while the Jays have won their last 15 games when scoring at least one run.
Creighton opens a five-game Valley homestand with a mid-week doubleheader against Drake on Wednesday. CU and DU will play two at the CU Sports Complex, starting at 3 p.m.
