LINCOLN, Neb. - Goals from Kyla Hoskins, Emily Orbell and Andrea Zuniga gave the Bluejay women's soccer team its third straight win as Creighton topped Akron 3-0 at the adidas Husker Classic Friday afternoon.
"We played very well today and did a good job of creating quality chances," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "Our finishing was good and we did enough to win but we will still look to improve our overall play on Sunday," Erickson added.
Hoskins got the Jays (6-1-1) on the board at the 15:43 mark of the first half with her fourth goal of the season. Her shot from the top right of the keeper's box found the top left corner of the net for the game-winner.
The goal moved her into second place on the team in goals and points with four and nine respectively.
The Jays took a 1-0 lead into intermission, but put up two goals in the second half to put the Zips (2-1-1) away. Beth Fyles assisted on Orbell's third goal of the season, as she beat Jeny Wolbert from the top of the penalty box halfway through the second for a 2-0 Jays lead.
With less than two minutes remaining in the match, Zuniga scored her first collegiate goal, capping off a dominating Creighton performance by beating Wolbert from the right wing for the final tally.
Creighton's back line was solid yet again as they held Akron to zero shots in the first half. It was the third straight match the Jays had held an opponent without a shot in at least one of the halves.
Alicia Montgomery turned away two Akron shots to move to 6-1-1 on the season. It was her sixth shutout of the season. Wolbert took the loss for Akron, as she fell to 2-1-1 in 2009.
The Jays will take on North Dakota on Sunday to finish up their stay in Lincoln. Kickoff is slated for 10:30 a.m.
