Men's Golf Takes Ninth at Fairway Club Invitational

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. -- The Creighton men's golf team opened the 2009-10 season with a ninth-place finish at the Fairway Club Invitational in Nebraska City, Neb., today. Creighton shot rounds of 307, 299 and 297 to total 903 overall.
The field included 12 teams and 72 competitors and was played at the par 72, ArborLinks Golf Course, which measured 7,190 yards.
Drake won the event with a meet record team score of 852, an impressive 12-under par. The Bulldogs also claimed the top two individuals, as Cody Schweinefus finished 9-under (207), two shots better than teammate Ben Freeman.
Creighton was paced by senior Michael McDonnell, who tied for 23rd with a 221 total. McDonnell shot rounds of 72, 74 and 75 and now owns seven career rounds of par or better.
Tying for 37th was sophomore Austin Miller. Miller opened with a 76 before consecutive 74's to close the tournament.
Sophomores Jack Dressen and Brandon Falley were next on the scoreboard for the Bluejays. Dressen had rounds of 76, 75 and 78 to finish 47th at 229, while Falley tied for 51st with rounds of 84, 76 and 72 to shoot a 232. His final-round 72 was four shots better than his previous collegiate low round.
Rounding out the scoring for CU was sophomore Ryan Herter, who placed 69th. Herter had rounds of 83 and 84 on Monday before rebounding to fire a 76 on Tuesday morning. His 76 was also a career-low at the collegiate level.
Also competing as an individual and not factoring into CU's team score was freshman John Rasmussen. The Millard South product shot 79, 76, 78 and his 233 total placed him in a tie for 53rd in the field.
Creighton heads to Farmingdale, N.Y., on Friday to play in The McLaughlin. That event will be played at Bethpage State Park's Red Course, which is located next to the famed Bethpage State Park Black Course that hosted the US Open this past June.
