AMES, Iowa - A pair of Bluejay freshmen enjoyed their collegiate debut by helping the Creighton softball team to an 8-0 win over Western Illinois Friday afternoon at the Cyclone Indoor Invitational. Rookie pitcher Becca Changstrom retired the first 10 batters she faced and hurled a complete game one-hitter, while fellow freshman McKenna Setlik was 3-for-3 with three RBI in the five-inning victory.
The Bluejays scored their first run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Liz McKewon got the offense going with a one-out single. McKewon would score from second base on a two-out single off the bat of Setlik in her first collegiate at bat.
The Jays added to their lead in the third inning with two more RBI from Setlik. McKewon again got the inning going with another single, followed by a single from Amy Baker to put runners at first and second with one out. Both runs would score on a Setlik double, to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead after three.
CU tacked on a run in the fourth inning, as Danai Martin worked a one-out walked and stole second base. With two outs, Martin would score from third base on an RBI single from Christa Ruf.
Creighton finished the game early with a four-run fifth inning, concluding the game due to the eight-run rule. Baker walked to start the final frame and she was followed by Setlik's third hit in as many at bats. Baker scored the first run of the inning on a single by Brittanee Grove and an error by the WIU left fielder. Malloree Grove followed with another single to score pinch-runner MaKenzie Michael with the game's sixth run. The Grove sisters then executed a double steal, with Britanee scoring as Malloree stole second base. The final run of the game came across on a pinch-hit RBI from freshman Brittnie Kreiser.
While the Bluejay offense was clicking, Changstrom (1-0) was dominating in her collegiate debut. The rookie right-hander retired the first 10 batters she faced before allowing a one-out single in the fourth inning. That proved to be the only blemish in her first game, tossing a one-hit, five-inning shutout, striking out four to go along with no walks.
Setlik finished her first college game 3-for-3 with three RBI. McKewon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, helping the Bluejays to 10 base hits in the victory. Martin walked in each of her three plate appearances, had two stolen bases and scored a run. The sophomore right fielder did not have a walk in 46 games - including 10 starts - last year.
Creighton is back in action at 5 pm when it takes on host Iowa State. The Cyclones swept a doubleheader from the Bluejays in Omaha last year.
