AMES, Iowa - Freshman Becca Changstrom struck out 12 to help lead the Creighton softball team to a 2-1 win over Valparaiso Saturday morning at the Cyclone Indoor Invitational in Ames. The Bluejays scored single tallies in the second and third inning to provide all the offense the rookie right-hander would need to pick up her second win in as many starts.
Creighton (2-1) scored its first run after freshmen Brittanee Grove led off the inning with a double. Her sister and fellow freshman Malloree Grove followed with a sacrifice bunt to move pinch-runner Emily Perry to third base. Perry scored on a grounder off the bat of rookie Ellen Homan to give the Jays an early lead.
The Jays manufactured another run in the third inning when Christa Ruf started the frame with a single. Ruf moved to second base on another sac bunt and came around to score from second on a single by Amy Baker.
Changstrom cruised through three scoreless innings to start the game, following her five-inning shutout on Friday. The rookie right-hander finally surrendered the first run of her career on a solo home run by Jordan Rutkowski in the top of the fourth inning. Following that homer, Changstrom allowed just one base runner to reach base over the remainder of the game.
Changstrom finished with 12 strikeouts in the one-run win, hurling a complete game to move to 2-0 in her young career. The Lincoln (Neb.) Southwest graduate allowed only three hits and one run, while she has yet to walk a batter in the first 12 innings pitched of her career.
Five different Bluejays had hits in the victory.
The game was Valpo's season-opener.
Creighton is back in action later today at the tournament hosted by Iowa State, taking on South Dakota State at 5 pm inside the Bergstrom Indoor Facility.
