AMES, Iowa - Creighton was issued 11 walks in a 6-3 softball victory over South Dakota State Saturday inside the Bergstrom Indoor Facility at Iowa State. The Bluejays were hitless until the fourth inning and finished with just four hits, but worked their most walks in a game in nearly four years to improve to 3-1 on the young season.
Creighton scored its first two runs without the benefit of a base hit in the first inning. Liz McKewon was hit by a pitch with one out and with two outs Brittnie Kreiser worked Creighton's first walk of the day. Brittanee Grove then walked to load the bases for her sister Malloree Grove. Malloree was issued a bases loaded walk to push McKewon across the plate for the first run of the game. The second run scored on a bases load balk called against SDSU starter Kori Seidlitz.
The Jackrabbits, playing in their season-opener, cut into the Bluejay lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Bluejay starter Kylie Hovinga allowed a walk and two singles to make the score 2-1 after two innings.
Hovinga found herself in another jam in the third inning after allowing back-to-back one-out singles. She settled down to strike out the next SDSU hitter she face, but that proved to be the final hitter she would see, as Brent Vigness called on freshman Brittany Telecky to get out of the inning. The rookie struck out Marlee Peterson to end the SDSU threat and keep the score 2-1 in favor of the Jays.
Seidlitz did not allow a hit to the Bluejays until the fourth inning, when McKewon reached on a two-out single. That single put two runners on with two outs. Amy Baker walked to load the bases for Kreiser, who was hit by a pitch to give the Jays a 3-1 lead. Brittanee Grove joined her sister in working a bases loaded walk in the game, making the score 4-1.
Creighton scored two more runs in the fifth inning to go ahead by five. Two more walks and an infield single by Jennifer Bohle loaded the bases to get the inning started. McKewon's two-run double was the big hit of the inning, putting the Bluejays up 6-1.
SDSU chipped away at the Bluejay lead, scoring a run in the fifth thanks to a single, a walk and two ground outs. The Jackrabbits made the score 6-3 on a solo home run by Morgan McCabe in the sixth.
Hovinga lasted 2.2 innings in the no-decision, striking out five, while allowing five hits and one earned run. Telecky picked up her first collegiate win, pitching the final 4.1 innings for the win. The rookie allowed four hits and two earned runs, while striking out two and walking three.
Seidlitz (0-1) took the loss, as she was responsible for all 11 walks and six earned run surrendered to the Bluejays. She also hit two batters and was charged with two balks because of illegal pitches issued with runners on base.
The 11 walks issued to Creighton were its most in a game since walking 12 times against Northern Colorado on Feb. 24, 2008.
McKewon went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in the Bluejay win.
Creighton concludes its first weekend of play with a rematch against Western Illinois on Sunday morning at 9. The Bluejays blanked the Leathernecks 8-0 in their season-opener on Friday.
